Civil Air Patrol Odessa SAREX August 2009
by 2nd Lt Vickey Bowen, Amarillo Tigershark Composite Squadron PAO

Civil Air Patrol (CAP) squadrons assembled on August 22 and 23 at the Odessa-Schleymeyer Field airport for a Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX). An Incident Command Post was set up by the Kerrville Composite Squadron and hosted by the Odessa Composite Squadron.

Designed to increase competency levels, CAP volunteers from nine West Texas units began their assigned duties in a realistic simulation environment of SAREX activities.

The Civil Air Patrol Emergency Systems missions benefit local communities. Each mission has a direct tie in with West Texas by practicing simulated missions and preparing the volunteers to look for fires, missing aircraft, and missing people,” said Colonel Joe R. Smith, Texas Wing Commander.

The squadrons represented were: Abilene Composite Squadron, El Paso Composite Squadron, Kerrville Composite Squadron, Lubbock Composite Squadron, Midland Composite Squadron, Odessa Composite Squadron, San Angelo Composite Squadron, Bexar County Senior Squadron of San Antonio and the Tigershark Composite Squadron of Amarillo.

Seven CAP airplanes and fourteen qualified mission pilots came prepared to simulate an actual SAREX. Exercises included crew planning, use of gridded charts, communications, flight briefing, sortie execution and debriefing.

Cadet ground crews practiced mock distressed or lost person searches with the assistance of aircrews. Exercises included finding lost persons near Pyote, Texas and locating several Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELT).

All CAP activities fall under three mission areas: aerospace education, cadet programs and emergency services. Take advantage of the many opportunities as a CAP volunteer in a local unit. Find categories to explore for ages 12 and up at www.gocivilairpatrol.com.
